Robert Palomo -

About "Gray"

I had the opening banjo riff lying around literally for years. Then one day I was staring out at the gray fog and drizzle that had been hanging around for days... weeks... months (??)... that's St. Petersburg's climate for you. I started humming along with the riff, a sort of Winnie-the-Pooh "complaining song":

"Gray. Another gray day. Just like yesterday." Aha! This could be a song!

That's how it started. That's how it stopped until winter set in and the woodstove fired up. One evening after dinner at the end of a hard-at-work week, my wife and I were sitting in front of it finishing our wine. The blaze was waning and I said "I'll toss on another chunk... pour another round of that there tasty vintage" (or words to that effect). Another "Aha!" moment on the way to the woodpile. The rest was just the craft of songwriting.

Well, OK, yeah, there might have been some hoochie-coochie involved at some point.

Banjo: Robert Palomo
Guitar: Robert Palomo
Mandolin: Robert Palomo
Bass: Robert Palomo
Vocals: Robert Palomo
Recorded at the All Natural Studio, Toksovo, Russia
Recorded and mixed by: one guess!

Banjo on this tune is my Stewart-MacDonald Eagle aluminum-pot kit banjo, ca. 1973, equipped with Renaissance head, custom Kat Eyz bridge, Presto tailpiece, and Goto guitar tuning machines. Fondly re-christened as "The Mutt".

Guitar is a mid-80s vintage Takamine cedar-top/mahogany box. It's what I had at the time.

Mandolin is some Samick solid-wood I got used and cheap to learn on. It is what it is.

Drums are midi samples, but I play 'em... no robotic loops.

"Gray" – Original Song Lyrics

by Robert Palomo, singer-songwriter, banjo-centric indie Americana, Folk & Bluegrass music

Another gray day
Another gray day just like yesterday
Seems so long that the sun's been away
But we won't let gray get in the way

I'll put another log on the fire
You pour some more of that rich ruby wine
Sit close by my side
We'll rekindle the desire
That still smolders in the embers of our souls
Through all this time
And the gray can't win the day
In two hearts that follow the way
Of love
Of real true love

Badger gray
Found some more in my beard today
That badger gray
Is here to stay
But we won't let gray get in the way

Repeat Chorus
